Dr Vivian Balakrishnan: We ‘care’ for you and will ‘look after’ you

Posted by singaporege2011 on May 3, 2011

Sounding not abit embarrassed, PAP candidate for Holland-Bukit Timah GRC and former Minister of Community, Youth and Sports Dr Vivian Balakrishnan proclaimed rather arrogantly during a PAP rally speech last night that the PAP regime does ‘care’ for Singaporeans.

“The People’s Action Party (PAP) Government is a caring one which listens to the fears and concerns of Singaporeans”, he said, adding to the growing list of sweeping mothermood statements made by PAP leaders in this election.

Dr Vivian also rebutted criticisms from ordinary Singaporeans that he has been ‘stingy’ in using state funds to help needy Singaporeans.

‘I think there is one key question the voters of Singapore are asking us. The question is, ‘Do you care about me?’ It is not about how smart you are or a matter of how detailed your plans are. But your heart,’ he said.

During a parliamentary session in July 2007, PAP MP Dr Lily Neo made an impassioned appeal to Dr Vivian to increase the monthly allowance of Public Assistance (PA) recipients from $290 to $320 monthly, or about $1 a day.

Dr Vivian retorted callously:

“How much do you want? Do you want three meals a day at a hawker center, food court, or restaurant?”

Though Dr Vivian spent months agonizing over whether to raise the amount of assistance to PA recipients by $1 a day, he was quick to burst the YOG budget by more than three times to a shocking $387 million dollars of which he described as “value for money” in an interview with Straits Times in August 2010:

“As the project evolved, it became clear that this is a new international event and it’s going to be a world-class event….when the YOG is over, we can sit back and decide if it was money well spent. On my part, I will make sure that we are going to get value for money.”

Less than a year later, it is pretty obvious that the YOG has been long forgotten and it has done little to boost Singapore’s international profile.

With no opposition in parliament to remind the PAP, it has taken Dr Vivian five long years to suddenly remember that it is his duty to look after Singaporeans:

‘We need to remind ourselves and the voters of Singapore that we care for you and we’ll look after you,’ he added.

Singaporeans must be shivering in fear whenever the PAP leaders say they will ‘care’ for them. The last time they did so, GST was increased to 7 percent right after the 2006 general election to “help the poor.”
