Lim Hwee Hua questioned Hougang TC’s ‘silence’ about its account

Posted by singaporege2011 on May 2, 2011

For the past few weeks, there have been rumblings of discontent among residents living in a HUDC precinct in Hougang of the failure of Hougang Town Council under the charge of Workers’ Party to reveal the amount of money in its sinking fund which has delayed their plans for upgrading.

As a result, they are not able to plan for the privatization of their estate and have to cough out their own money to send a lawyer’s letter to Hougang TC demanding details of its accounts, especially its sinking fund, which remains enshrouded in mystery.

In February, the residents had voted for privatisation to go ahead. The seven blocks of HUDC flats, 344 to 350 in Hougang, Avenue 7, will be privatised after residents voted strongly for the move.

The PAP candidate for Aljunied GRC, Mrs Lim Hwee Hua told the state media that Hougang TC’s continued silence was disturbing as the affected residents were asking many questions.

She added that Hougang TC’s failure to deal with a simple matter will have “great implications for Aljunied residents because if WP cannot even account for themselves in Hougang TC, residents should wonder how they can manage a town council on a larger scale.”

“Is it just messy or are they holding back till after the elections so that whoever wins Hougang will then inherit the accounts? The Workers’ Party has always emphasised transparency and accountability of the Town Council. It is very perplexing why they have kept very quiet.”

The Workers’ Party is fielding its strongest team in Aljunied GRC which includes Hougang MP Low Thia Kiang, NCMP Sylvia Lim and top corporate lawyer Chen Show Mao.

Aljunied appears likely to become the first GRC to fall to the opposition based on the large turnout at WP rallies so far, prompting even PAP de facto leader Lee Kuan Yew to admit tacitly that the PAP may lose Aljunied, the only ‘hotspot’ in this election so far.

Minister Ms Lim, do you know what is the sinking fund of my flat? I pay conservancy charge for my HDB flat every month. I am sure every HDB flat owner wants to know this too. Thank you.
