Lee Kuan Yew: Aljunied voters have 5 years to ‘repent’ if they vote for WP

Posted by singaporege2011 on May 1, 2011

Despite the massive public backlash, PAP de facto leader Lee Kuan Yew continued to issue veiled threats to Aljunied voters if they (dare) vote for the opposition.

Speaking to reporters at the Radin Mas branch after meeting with party activists, Lee proclaimed that ‘the PAP will not lose in this election, as the only hot-seat is Aljunied.’

He then called on Aljunied voters to ‘repent’ for five years if they decide to support WP:

‘If Aljunied decides to go that way, well Aljunied has five years to live and repent.’

Lee then dropped a hint that the PAP regime will deny upgrading funds to Aljunied GRC like what it did to Hougang and Potong Pasir if it falls to the opposition.

‘We accept the verdict of the people, but they must also accept the consequences of their actions. You must expect the PAP to look after PAP constituencies first,’ he quipped.

The Workers’ Party won 43.7 percent of the valid votes in Aljunied GRC during the 2006 general election. It is fielding a ‘dream’ team to contest in Aljunied again which include Hougang MP Low Thia Kiang, NCMP Sylvia Lim and top corporate lawyer Chen Show Mao.

At 88 years of age, Lee Kuan Yew is already the world’s oldest living MP and minister. His constant hogging of the limelight makes one wonder who is really in charge of the PAP.

Aljunied GRC is the most hotly contested GRC in this GE and is closely watched.

The PAP team is not taking things lying down and is equally determined to put up a good fight. But psychologically the PAP team is on the defensive and PAP leaders, especially MM Lee, are pessimistic of PAP chances. This prompted the Minister Mentor to warn Aljunied voters that they have five years to live and repent. Christians are appalled at the choice of the word repent by MM Lee. In christianity the word repent is used when a sin has been committed. Is MM Lee trying to imply that voting for the WP team in Aljunied is a sin? Is this not sacrilege? This is something for the Minister Mentor to unravel and this is not the first time he has created a booboo.

Unfortunately, MM will not try to unravel as he now thinks he is GOD ?

I respectfully disagree with this comment as the foundation for the accusation against Mr Lee is weak.

Firstly, I think too much is being read into Mr Lee’s use of the word ‘repent’. The particular link to Christianity is uncalled for. In the bible, the word ‘repent’ has a meaning more to do with an active turning away from (sin). One of the greatest enemies of God is sin, and therefore that is a constant urge and plea for his people to turn away from sin. If ‘repent’ is applied specifically to sin, what then, have you to say, when God does some repenting himself (Jonah 3:9)? Is God repenting of some sin he commmitted?

    No!

Repent is a ‘turning away from’. It is hoped that God would turn away from his anger and not bring judgement on his people.

Therefore, I think too much is read into the word ‘repent’ and a more suiting understanding of what Mr Lee says is simply, turn back.

I disagree more strongly against the bringing in of Christianity in hope of stirring up a Christian audience and distorting what Mr Lee says by sensationalizing it.
