PAP to face contest in 82 out of 87 seats

Posted by singaporege2011 on April 27, 2011

With the exception of Tanjong Pagar GRC, all the seats will be contested in the coming general election as the opposition fields its strongest slate of candidates ever in the history of Singapore.

14 out of 15 GRCs and all 12 SMCs will be contested bringing the total number of contested seats to 82 out of 87 seats available for grabs.

The PAP is facing stiff competition in at least three GRCs – Aljunied, Bishan-Toa Payoh and Holland Bukit-Timah.

Hougang MP stunned the PAP by leaving his stronghold of Hougang to contest in Aljunied GRC together with Sylvia Lim and newcomer Chen Show Mao.

PAP’s Wong Kan Seng will square off against veteran opposition leader Chiam See Tong in Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC while the SDP is fielding its ‘A’ team in Holland-Bukit Timah GRC.

With public disgruntlement against the PAP at an all-time high, it faces its toughest election to date against a resurgent opposition whose ranks are boosted by the entry of several highly qualified candidates from the private sector.
