Crowd chanted ‘Kate Spade!’ as Tin Pei Ling made her speech

The PAP appears to be facing a tough battle in Marine Parade GRC judging from the contrasting response of the crowd at the Nomination Center when the PAP and NSP teams made their speeches after submitting their nomination forms:

When Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong took to the podium, his speech was drowned out by a chorus of ‘Boos!’

As Ms Tin Pei Ling, the PAP’s youngest candidate began her speech in Mandarin, the crowd chanted ‘Kate Spade! Kate Spade!’ in reference to a photo Ms Tin took together with a Kate Spade bag which is widely circulated on the internet.

In contrast, the crowd cheered and applauded when NSP candidate Ms Nicole Seah called on Singaporeans to vote for her team so that they can speak for them in parliament.

Marine Parade has been uncontested for 19 years. It is supposed to be a walkover if not for Ms Tin Pei Ling whose candidacy sparked a massive outcry among Singaporeans. Sensing a chance, NSP shrewdly fielded 24 year old Ms Seah in Marine Parade.

The PAP is facing its toughest election to date with 82 seats out of 87 being contested. With public disgruntlement against its policies at an all-time high, it may lose a few GRCs including Marine Parade on 7 May.
