SDP rebuts Dr Vivian: It is not pursuing a gay agenda

Posted by singaporege2011 on April 26, 2011

Singapore Democratic Party’s Secretary-General Dr Chee Soon Juan has answered Dr Vivian Balakrishnan’s call for it to state its position on the issues of gay rights.

Instead of engaging the SDP on policy matters, the PAP team in Holland-Bukit Timah has launched a smear campaign to demolish its opponents by capitalizing on a gay forum attended by SDP’s candidate Dr Vincent Wijeysingha a year ago.

“We are not pursuing the gay agenda and none of our MPs will,” said the Singapore Democratic Party on Monday.

Dr Chee also expressed disappointment at the way Dr Vivian has raised the matter:

“He did not have the courage to say what he wanted to say at first, and he was beating around the bush. We call on Dr Balakrishnan not to continue in this manner, and I can only hope that he will not adopt smear tactics in this campaign, and I ask him not to go down this road. We are better than that; we can disagree on policies and not have to resort to personal attacks.”

Sounding calm and composed unlike Dr Vivian, Dr Chee added the SDP candidates had stepped forward because they wanted to serve.

“That’s their only agenda. When we speak up, we do so for all Singaporeans because we serve all Singaporeans, not just a segment of Singaporeans.”

It is strange that ‘gay issue’ is the only issue Dr Vivian could raise. When SDP asked him to account for bursting the YOG budget by more than three times, he said there is no need to do so though the money come from taxpayers.
