Dr Vivian resorts to ‘gutter politics’ to smear Dr Vincent Wijeysingha

Posted by singaporege2011 on April 25, 2011

Instead of accepting the SDP’s challenge to an open debate on policies, PAP Youth and Sports Minister Dr Vivian Balakrishnan has resorted to ‘gutter politics’ to smear his opponent Dr Vincent Wijeysingha.

Dr Vivian made a ‘mountain out of a molehill’ over an online video showing Dr Vincent at a forum discussing gay issues last year though the subject was never on the election agenda.

Using the Straits Times as his mouthpiece, Dr Vivian questioned the political motivation of Dr Vincent:

‘We believe that candidates should be upfront about their political agenda and motives, so that voters are able to make an informed choice,’ said the statement, signed off by Dr Balakrishnan, and his teammates, Mr Christopher De Souza, Mr Liang Eng Hwa and Ms Sim Ann.

Using ‘gay issues’ to smear SDP may backfire dramatically on the PAP as gays are part of the Singapore community too and many of there are already very peeved with the PAP’s stance on the matter.

‘The issue is not Wijeysingha’s sexual orientation. That is a matter for him. The video raises the question on whether Dr Wijeysingha will now pursue this cause in the political arena and what is the SDP’s position on the matter,’ the statement added.

The SDP said that it would respond to the ‘PAP’s smear politics of discrimination and divisiveness’ later on Monday night, said its media spokesman James Gomez.

SDP should not be distracted by the PAP’s desperate attempt to throw a smoke-screen to divert public attention from their own failures.

Dr Vivian has been rapped by Singaporeans for bursting the YOG budget by more than three times last year which he has yet to account properly for.

SDP is fielding the strongest team from the opposition with Dr Vincent, Tan Jee Say, Dr Ang Yong Guan and Michelle to contest Dr Vivian in Holland-Bukit Timah GRC.
