PM: SM and MM will be ‘watching’ and ‘giving advice’

There will be no special roles for the PAP’s two oldest ministers in the coming general elections though they will still be ‘watching’ and ‘giving advice.’

In an interview with the state media, PM Lee was asked if SM Goh would play a ‘special role’ in the coming election like in 2006 when he was tasked to win back Hougang and Potong Pasir.

“SM (Goh) will, as he says, be watching and giving us advice. MM (Lee), I am sure, will be watching and giving us advice too,” he replied.

Singapore is the only country in the entire world with two former Prime Ministers in the cabinet. Even the Chinese Communist Party of China retires its Politburo leaders compulsorily once they reach 70 years of age and they are subjected to a two-term limit.

At 88 years of age this year, Lee Kuan Yew is already the world’s oldest living MP and minister. Though he admitted he is not doing much lately except ‘forecasting’, he still earns more than $3 million dollars annually, more than 5 times that of U.S. President Barack Obama.

Lee will be contesting in Tanjong Pagar GRC and will be giving speeches at the PAP election rallies.

With the PAP facing its toughest election to date, it will be interesting to hear what Lee has to say to claw back lost support from Singaporeans who are eagerly waiting to receive his latest ‘hard truths’.
