PM Lee on cost of living: Put worries in ‘perspective’

Posted by singaporege2011 on April 22, 2011

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has urged Singaporeans to put worries about rising cost of living in ‘perspective’, claiming that the PAP government has put in measures to ‘alleviate’ the problem.

In an interview with the state media, PM Lee ‘acknowledged’ that the cost of living is a top concern among Singaporeans which may have an impact on the coming general election.

He claimed that the PAP has introduced a series of measures to help Singaporeans such as the Grow and Share assistance package disbursed to Singaporeans on the eve of the general election.

Another is the deliberate appreciation of the Singapore dollar to curb imported inflation.

The rising cost of living can be attributed partly to the PAP’s economic and immigration policies.

While annual inflation grows at an average of 5 percent since 2006, the median income of Singaporeans have stagnanted at S$2,500 monthly.

It will be difficult for PM Lee to see things from the ‘perspective’ of ordinary Singaporeans as he is paid more than S$3 million dollars annually, or more than 5 times that of U.S. President Barack Obama.

With public anger against the PAP at an all-time high, it faces a tough battle in the coming general election against a resurgent opposition whose ranks are boosted by the entry of several highly qualified candidates.
