Ng Eng Hen challenges opposition to state their intention to form a government

Posted by singaporege2011 on April 22, 2011

PAP Education Minister Dr Ng Eng Hen has issued a challenge to the opposition to state its intention to form a government.

Dr Ng was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a walkabout in Toa Payoh where his team will be facing stiff competition from the Singapore People’s Party.

Singapore has been rocked this week by news of several highly qualified professionals and former government officials standing for the coming election on the opposition ticket.

The most prominent candidates so far are from the resurgent Singapore Democratic Party – former principal private secretary to SM Goh Mr Tan Jee Say and former SAF colonel and psychiatrist Dr Ang Yong Kuan who were unveiled by SDP at a press conference today.

The latest development must have stunned the PAP which is facing its toughest electoral battle to date.

Dr Ng is probably baiting the opposition to admit that it has the intention to form the government for the PAP to use its usual scare-mongering tactics to frighten voters from voting for the opposition on the ground that it is too inexperienced to govern Singapore.

The opposition should ignore Dr Ng’s calls and stay focused on the key issues in the coming general election, namely the relentless influx of foreigners, sky-rocketing HDB flat prices and rampant inflation.

Singaporeans should not be too worried by the prospects of the opposition winning power. Penang was won by the Malaysian opposition in 2008 and it is now the most liveable city in Malaysia. Surely our opposition can do much better than their Malaysian counterparts.

When PAP won the 1959 election, did they have the experience running a country? Are they ready to form a government? Nevertheless, they managed to run Singapore until today. So Mr Ng, Sir, what do you think? Can the opposition form the next government?
