Khaw Boon Wan accuses Dr Chee of ‘twisting’ his words on ‘JB nursing home’ quotes

Posted by singaporege2011 on April 22, 2011

PAP Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan has accused Dr Chee Soon Juan of ‘twisting’ his words in a comment he made two years ago which sparked a massive outcry among Singaporeans.

Speaking to the media yesterday at a press conference to introduce the Singapore Democratic Party’s first batch of candidates, Dr Chee said the party is contesting in Sembawang GRC partly because of the insensitivity of Mr Khaw who is the anchor minister in the constituency.

‘I mean, can you believe a minister would come and tell Singaporeans: Why don’t you send your parents to Johor Baru?’ he said.

Mr Khaw subsequently said Dr Chee’s comments were ‘total fabrication’.

“I was merely making a comment, because I happened to visit a nursing home in Johor Baru and the cost there, to be expected, was very low, very much cheaper than Singapore’s. I suppose they saw advantage in putting words in my mouth or twisting my words.”

In an article titled ‘Living in nursing homes in JB?’ published in the Straits Times on 10 February 2009, Mr Khaw reportedly suggested that Singaporeans could consider living in nursing homes in neighbouring Johor Baru as “it would be cheaper, yet be near enough to Singapore for family members to visit and for residents to return for medical care if necessary.”

Mr Khaw added that “ormost Singaporeans, visiting a relative in a Johor Baru nursing home would not pose significant difficulties.”

“Of course many visit daily, but quite a significant number visit only during the weekends, so what is the difference in putting them in Johor Baru?” he quipped.

Was Mr Khaw misquoted by Straits Times? It is strange that Straits Times did not republish Mr Khaw’s quotes in the article to give the erroneous perception that Dr Chee has indeed ‘twisted’ Mr Khaw’s words.

Mr Khaw should step forward and clarify what he said in 2009 instead of accusing others of putting words in his mouth as most readers will have the impression that he is asking Singaporeans to live in nursing homes in JB based on the Straits Times report.

Live in nursing homes in JB?
SINGAPOREANS could consider living in nursing homes in neighbouring Johor Baru, Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan suggested yesterday.

It would be cheaper, yet be near enough to Singapore for family members to visit and for residents to return for medical care if necessary, he said.

He told Parliament yesterday that he recently visited a site in Johor Baru where a Singaporean investor was planning to build a 200-bed nursing home.

He asked the investor about the costs involved, and was stunned at how low they were.

He said: ‘It is mind-boggling. The cost of land and construction cost is so low that my cost of putting up just a polyclinic (in Singapore) is probably more than his cost of putting up a 200-bed nursing home (in Johor Baru).

‘The monthly cost of keeping a resident in a private nursing home in Singapore, you can stretch it easily to pay at least 2-1/2 months of nursing home care in Johor Baru.’

If any medical problems cropped up, the elderly could be taken back to Singapore by ambulance, he said.

For most Singaporeans, visiting a relative in a Johor Baru nursing home would not pose significant difficulties, he said.

The investor, who is a nursing home chief executive, told him that many people visited their relatives weekly, even in nursing homes in Singapore.

Mr Khaw added: ‘Of course many visit daily, but quite a significant number visit only during the weekends, so what is the difference in putting them in Johor Baru?’

  2. Why are the "servants" being paid salary equivalent of a Master?? said

The Singapore story is resembling more like the Animal Farm where it is “four legs good but two legs better”. I fear it may become “all citizens good but PRs and foreigners are even better” cos they are “foreign talent” who’s here to “make jobs for citizens”. When will people wake up to see the sad state we’re in right now? Don’t wait until all foreign “talents” and PRs withdraw all our reserves and leave us beggars! Dear all, please wake up and wake up your neighbors, colleagues, friends and relatives to this reality!

PAP are imposters and great “escape artists” that can rival Hollywood and david Copperfield.

When GE period they Proclaim Loud and clear they are servants to Serve, hahahaha. BUT AFTER each and Every election is over when they win, THEY switch roles, no more the servants that they lied to be, BUT rare talented masters that are deserved to be PAID (by themselves) $millions and millions. The GREATEST joke is always they proclaim, again, run the country well and Singaporeans “voted” – without admission they ALSO twisted, just as KBW said, when Sgp faced recession, its the Worlds Fault, and when Singapore recoveres it is PAPs credit.

Fuck is this Classic TWIST ?????

What so different from CSJ purported had said which KBW said ‘twist’???

One day soon, we can also sub-contract or outsource our government to another country.

We will have a cheaper and betterer (sic) government.

Khaw as a Govt Minister should not have even suggested to Singaporeans to send their old folks away, whether it is within Singapore or elsewhere. It’s like telling your kids no need to be filial anymore.

If any affected family has to send their senior members of their family because of unavoidable circumstances beyond their control, it is the individual family members’ choice and decision.

Surely how can our PAP govt be so heartless to even suggest it in the first place ?
