Anti-PAP forum letters available only in online edition of Straits Times

Posted by singaporege2011 on April 22, 2011

With the election fever heating up across Singapore, the number of letters to the Straits Times Forum on the election has increased as well.

As the national English Daily, higher standards are expected of the Straits Times, but fortunately it falls short where the much valued journalistic traits of fairness, objectivity and truthfulness are concerned.

In a review of the last seven days of letters to the ST Forum, it is observed that letters expressing support for the PAP get extensive coverage in its print edition while those questioning its policies are available only in its online edition with a lower readership.

For example, in yesterday’s Straits Times, four forum letters expressing reservation about the PAP’s ‘asset enhancement policies’ of HDB flats were published only in its online edition while the only letter criticising WP’s housing policies appeared in both the print and online edition.

An unsuspecting Singaporean reading the printed version of Straits Times only will get the erroneous impression that Singaporeans are against WP’s proposals and are supportive of the PAP’s housing policies.

The blatant ‘astroturfing’ to shape public opinion in favor of the PAP by the Straits Times does not reflect the genuine public sentiments on the ground.

Singaporeans seeking to express their views and takes on current affairs can consider writing in to The Temasek Review, Singapore’s leading online news portal.

As of today, the readership of Temasek Review has already exceeded that of Zaobao.com and todayonline.com and is fast approaching that of straitstimes.com.

Your letters will be published in full without any editing or censorship.

The Singapore story is resembling more like the Animal Farm where it is “four legs good but two legs better”. I fear it may become “all citizens good but PRs and foreigners are even better” cos they are “foreign talent” who’s here to “make jobs for citizens”. When will people wake up to see the sad state we’re in right now? Don’t wait until all foreign “talents” and PRs withdraw all our reserves and leave us beggars! Dear all, please wake up and wake up your neighbors, colleagues, friends and relatives to this reality!
