PAP Nee Soon candidates abort contest to offer free ipads to residents

Posted by singaporege2011 on April 20, 2011

In an embarrassing U-turn, PAP candidates in Nee Soon GRC have aborted a contest offering residents a chance to win free ipads if they connect with a website set up by them.

They are Patrick Tay, K Shanmugam, Lim Wee Kiak, Muhammad Faishal and Lee Bee Wah.

The residents were asked to name five ‘familiar faces’ on the website and they will have a chance to win a free ipad if they get all their answers right.

When contacted, Dr Lim Wee Kiak said the website was launched about two weeks back during a grassroots event, PCF Celebration.

Dr Lim described the initiative as an “outreach programme” for residents to know what is happening in their ward and the candidates better. He said it is a contest to get the public to visit the website and the team is not giving out freebies to entice voters to vote for the party or candidates.

A post on the site now says the contest is suspended since Parliament has been dissolved and will resume on the same terms after the election.

It is not revealed what prompted the sudden suspension. The contest sparked a huge uproar in cyberspace with many netizens lampooning the PAP MPs for resorting to ‘cheapskate’ tactics to ‘buy’ their votes.

There are no immediate comments from the PAP candidates if the ipads were purchased using their own monies or from the coffers of Nee Soon grassroots organizations.
