PAP MPs offer free ipads to woo support of voters ahead of coming GE

Posted by singaporege2011 on April 19, 2011

Is a sign of innovation or desperation? PAP MPs in the newly-formed Nee Soon GRC are offering free ipads to residents to ‘connect’ with them:

The residents are asked to name five ‘familiar faces’ on a website started by the PAP’s team for Nee Soon and they will have a chance to win a free ipad if they get all their answers right.

One of Nee Soon’s GRC PAP candidates Dr Lim Wee Kiat denies giving out freebies to ‘entice’ voters to vote for them in the coming generation, describing the initiative as an ‘outreach programme’ for residents to know the candidates and ward better.

When contacted, one of the PAP candidates for Nee Soon GRC, Dr Lim Wee Kiak, said the website was launched about two weeks back during a grassroots event, PCF Celebration.

Dr Lim described the initiative as an “outreach programme” for residents to know what is happening in their ward and the candidates better. He said it is a contest to get the public to visit the website and the team is not giving out freebies to entice voters to vote for the party or candidates.

It is not known who is paying for the ipads – the PAP MPs, the PAP HQ or taxpayers monies from Nee Soon Constituency Citizens Committee and other grassroots organizations.

I thought they’re only allowed to spend $3.50 per voter altogether on their campaign?!?
